Present Sense is a loose concept album about ‘living in the moment’ and follows the journey of an unnamed protagonist who finds and loses love but comes to a realisation that attaining contentment in life is the key to personal fulfilment.

The opening track, “Vancouver Gurls", was inspired by Mathews’ sojourn in the Canadian city in September 2014 and was subsequently written in Seattle, Washington, the first of its kind to be recorded by Mathews. The song begins the protagonist’s journey in the central story of the album.

Present Sense was recorded over the course of five months with the key involvement of drummer Ray Aziz, bassist Nelson Tan, violinist Eileen Chai and lead guitarist Joshua Tan (collectively dubbed “The Groovy People”). Aided and abetted by co-producer Patrick Chng at That Locked Door studio, the album was constructed from ground up, with the addition of sound effects and voice overs (from Esther Low, James Khoo & X’Ho) to flesh out the conceptual thrust of Present Sense.

“Present Sense is similar to the @midnight EP as it involves a full band line-up and that approach gave the songs a vibrant dynamism. I am especially grateful to have Josh on board to orchestrate the electric guitar arrangements - the tracks simply jump out at the listener! Certainly, this album rocks out a little harder than my previous recent releases and that was a conscious choice to stand out from what passes for pop music nowadays”.

Present Sense is the third release from Mathews in as many years and finds him in a particularly prolific mood after releasing six EPs/albums with Watchmen, The Crowd and Popland in the previous 15 years.
